The Web Tools Project (WTP) by the Eclipse Foundation is a set of open source tools that substantially reduce the time required for the development of Web applications, EJBs, and Web services. The WTP's current version is 0.7.1 and version 1.0 is coming later this year. The framework provides wizards and tools to create EJBs, Web components such as servlets and JSPs, and Web services using the Axis engine.

Eclipse Foundation executive director Mike Milinkovich recently made remarks critical of Microsoft's effort to bash the open source community. Milinkovich, in an exclusive interview with SYS-CON Media publishing director Jeremy Geelan earlier this year, had already stated his views in depth, views which remain relevant as the year nears its end.

The Eclipse Foundation says it took roughly 60 days to ship 1 million copies of its version 3.0.2, and is now trying to improve on that performance with its new version 3.1 It has issued a challenge in which members of the Eclipse community will make a donation of either time or money for each day under 60 days that it takes to reach a million downloads of 3.1.
